Undergraduate Admission
Students who wish to study architecture at MIT must first be accepted to MIT. At the end of the first year MIT students decide which course of study they wish to pursue. The Undergraduate Degrees page contains information specific to the undergraduate admissions.

Graduate Admission
Admission to the graduate programs in the Department of Architecture is handled by the Department, but is facilitated by MIT's web-based admission system. Applicants who use the web-based system do not need to mail application forms the the Department, but all other supporting documents should all be sent directly to the Department of Architecture at the address below. Supporting documents are transcripts and any recommendations or test scores that cannot be send electronically. The Masters Degrees page lists specific details regarding applications to the Department's Masters degree programs. Specific information pertaining to the doctoral programs is listed on the Doctoral Degrees page.

Prospective students to the MArch or SMArchS programs are welcome to join us for an open house in November. Accepted students in both programs will be invited to an open house in April. Information about the open houses will be located on our News and Events page.

General Graduate Admissions Procedure

All degree programs begin in the fall term. The Application for Graduate Admission used by all graduate programs at MIT that can be completed online (strongly preferred) or downloaded and sent to the MIT Department of Architecture by December 15. Portfolios may be sent by the first week in January to allow for students to include their most recent work. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be sure that the completed application forms and all supporting materials are received by the department by the deadline. Applicants will be notified via e-mail approximately three weeks after the admission deadline regarding missing application materials.

Students interested in applying to more than one degree program must submit a separate application and fee to each department and/or degree program. "Department" in this sense refers to our discipline groups, such as Building Technology, History, Theory and Criticism, Urbanism, or Visual Studies.

Students who do not have the minimum score required on their English language test, (TOEFL or IELTS) will be reviewed but can only be offered conditional admission if their applications are viewed favorably. These students should plan to retake their tests as and submit new scores as soon as possible. Conditional admission is not a guarentee of admission and applicants in this status may miss out on financial or other opportunities.

If you are completing the paper application, please submit the following along with the MIT Graduate Application for Admission to the Department of Architecture. The online system will include these documents.

  • Financial Statement form
  • MIT Biographical Data Form
  • Official transcripts for each undergraduate and graduate institution attended
