History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture and Art

The History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture and Art (HTC) discipline group emphasizes ways of developing and organizing concepts as well as understanding the physical and social context of architects' and artists' works. The group is most concerned with the production process itself, both in understanding the meaning of the architect's and artist's actions and, more importantly, in being able to contribute directly to analytical and design processes, including work in architectural design studios, art exhibitions, or other aesthetic interventions.

Historical course offerings deal with the social and physical context of the built environment on many scales, as well as the philosophical, political, and material context for works of art. While not limited to any particular period of time, subjects generally focus on contemporary understandings relevant to the basic premises held by artists and architects in their historical settings. Theory and criticism provides the methodological basis for evaluating the premises, the process, the final product, and the implications (social, formal, conceptual and other) of practices in these artistic and architectural domains. Our faculty members explore the development of salient attitudes regarding art and architectural works, and we produce interdisciplinary tools for probing the wider significance of such shifts over time.
