EXHIBITIONS, SYMPOSIUMS, CONFERENCES…
China Planning Network (CPN)
City Resilience Roundtable: Rebuilding and Restoration after Sichuan Earthquake
Beijing/Chengdu July 16-17, 2008
Themes:
Over forty million people are directly impacted by the catastrophic earthquake in Sichuan, China with five million left homeless, which entails a massive task in the aftermath of the earthquake.
The CPN Roundtable emphasizes the long term nature of the rebuilding and restoration after the disaster and focuses on what planning's role is in this, and how the academic community can contribute to the rebuilding of the destroyed towns and villages and the restoration of the normal life activities.
We want to encourage positive thinking on what opportunities that disasters may bring about that would not otherwise have been available and critical thinking on what disasters help to expose: problems and complexities that would not otherwise have been noticed.
Roundtable Organization:
Despite of such a short notice, we have received a great encouragement and prompt responses from the invited scholars and professionals.
Among those, are MIT affiliates:
MIT Chancellor Phillip Clay will offer his condolence, support and encourage on behalf of Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the opening remarks of the City Resilience Roundtable.
Prof. Lawrence Vale, author of The Resilient City: How Modern Cities Recover from Disaster, head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, will speak in and chair the Roundtable.
Roundtable Logistics:
The CPN City Resilience Roundtable will be held as part of the CPN China Week 2008, the 5th year continuation of CPN's effort to fuse western knowledge on urban development with China's unprecedented experience. CPN China Week 2008 will be held in Beijing on July 14-19, including four main activities:
CPN Urban Housing Congress 2008……………..................July 14-15
CPN Cross-Cultural Planning Education Roundtable………July 15
CPN City Resilience Roundtable….……………….....…….....July 16-17
CPN Urban Transport Congress 2008……............................July 18-19

Fellowships, Scholarships and Grants…
Rafael Viñoly Architects 2008-09 Grants for Research
2008-09 Grants for Research in Architecture Announced
Projects to Focus on Transformations in the Built Environment
Within Dynamically Changing Societies
This November, Rafael Viñoly Architects will award up to five grants of US$60,000 each for studies focused on transformations in the built environment within dynamically changing societies.
Proposed projects should emphasize original research focused on any region of the world, though there is particular interest in studies addressing relevant issues in China, the Middle East, Russia, and South America. Study subjects might include new demands for housing and infrastructure due to urban immigration in China, South Asia, and Africa; the proliferation of new cities in sparsely populated regions of the Middle East; threats to historic resources posed by development or changing political climates in Russia, Eastern Europe, and former European colonies; and more. The firm seeks insights into how these and other transitions are reshaping the work of architects and others charged with managing our physical surroundings.
.
Studies may be framed in reference to aspects of architectural design, engineering, construction, planning, project delivery, and conservation; the techniques, technologies, practices, and materials associated with these; the governmental policies, economic, and social factors that shape them; or the trades, crafts, and professions with which they are involved.
.
Citizens of all countries are eligible to apply for the grants individually or as teams. In addition to receiving financial support to pursue their studies, Rafael Viñoly Architects Research Fellows may elect to spend a portion of their time in residence at the firm's New York offices. In 2010, the firm intends to publish the Fellows' final papers in book form and to sponsor a New York conference at which the Fellows will present and discuss their work.
The deadline for submitting grant proposals is August 1, 2008. Grant recipients will be notified in November. Visit www.rvatr.com for more information.

Summer UROP Leadership/Mentorship Opportunity
The Office of Minority Education (OME) and the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP) have partnered to provide 2008 Interphase participants with the opportunity to conduct pre-UROPs during the summer. Pre-UROPs introduce students to MIT labs, faculty, and research conducted through UROP.
The program will pair these incoming students with an experienced UROP student, graduate student, or faculty member, whom they will shadow in lab during the month of July.
Becoming a peer mentor is an excellent way for current students to gain valuable leadership, team-building, teaching, and communication skills while making a meaningful connection with incoming freshmen.
The Interphase Pre-UROP program will begin on Tuesday, July 8 and will end on Tuesday, July 29. Peer mentors must commit to working with their pre-UROP student(s) from 1:30 until 3:30 PM every Tuesday and Thursday during this period.
Faculty, graduate students, and UROPs in your department who are interested in becoming Interphase pre-UROP mentors, should fill out an online application at: http://mit.edu/urop/interphase/uropmentorapp.html by June 20.
If you have questions about the program, please feel free to contact Melissa Martin-Greene in the UAAP, Room 7-104, or Tammy Stevens and Karina Vielma in OME, Room 4-113.
