4.367 is an advanced studio seminar primarily focused on the
production of visual art in "public places" - outside of the
gallery and museum context. Readings about aesthetic, social, and
political issues in the urban setting are analyzed vis-à-vis
[enforced] public policies. A main objective of this course is to
undo the monumentality of public art. Hence, while more traditional
forms of commemoration are examined, it is always so in comparison
to more temporal and critical forms of public art and action.
Historical models include experiments by the Russian
Constructivist, the Situationist International, Conceptual Art,
and more recently the Interventionist tactics.
